Freeweaver is a contemporary weaving studio dedicated to handloom practice. As London's first accredited studio for Japanese freestyle weaving, it introduced this distinctive approach to the capital and has become a centre for contemporary textile practice, for artists, designers, students and first-time weavers through a program of workshops and artist residency placements.
Specialising in working with natural fibres such as linen, hemp, cotton, silk and wool as well as a range of earth pigment dyes, the studio explores sustainable textile traditions through contemporary making. Freeweaver Studio also produces textiles for theatre and film, and collaborates with fashion designers, cultural organisations and museums to create bespoke woven pieces, installations, exhibitions and research-led projects.
Founded and led by Dutch-born textile artist Erna Janine, the studio is now in its tenth year.
